2005-07-28

ON Saturday 20 August, Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona’s play, The Island, will be performed in the Barnyard Theatre at Bridge House School.

Written in 1973, The Island explores the spirit of survival of those imprisoned by the Apartheid regime.

This modern classic is considered to be one of the most significant plays of the twentieth century and tells the story of two prisoners labouring in a quarry and rehearsing scenes from Sophocles’ Antigone for the prison concert, in their cell at night.

Rising stars, Ephraim Gordon and Claude van Wyk, both in matric at Bridge House, have a depth of feeling for this play which will leave you speechless.

Recently, they performed this powerful piece of theatre for a private audience including four examiners.

Examiner Heather Scott, said, “I saw this production in England four years ago, performed by John Kani and Winston Ntshona, and Claude and Ephraim’s performance moved me as much!”

Director, Lizinda Deysel, will also take the play to Groendal High School for a school performance there.

The performance in the Barnyard Theatre is in aid of the Bridge House Bursary Fund.

Tickets are R150 per person and can be booked by phoning Robyn Watkins on 874-8100 or 082-371-3267.
