United get their revenge

United get their revenge

IT was derby day at the Mbekweni Stadium on Saturday when arch-rivals, Mbekweni United and Mbekweni Cosmos, clashed in the second round of the Metropolitan Soccer League.

After Cosmos managed to beat United twice last season, the latter fired on all cylinders this weekend to pocket a convincing 3-0 win after 90 minutes of quality soccer.

Both teams seemed fired-up and ready for battle before the whistle for kick-off had gone, but United stunned the crowd only 15 seconds into the match when they scored an unbelievable long-range goal that challenged (and beat) the opposition goalie for the top left corner.

After the setback, Cosmos consolidated and managed to show glimpses of their class, but the confidence gained by United after their first minute score put Cosmos too far on the back foot and in a position where it was necessary to open up their attack.

This, of course, suited Cosmos, as they managed to score two more goals to finish off their rivals with a 3-0 victory.

According to Cosmos’s coach, Memory Pikinini, his team’s loss was due to rustiness and a lack of preparation.

“We haven't practised as much as we would have liked to, especially since we have just returned from a lengthy break. The players are a bit rusty, seeing that we had two weeks off.

“But training will start in all earnest this week and we will surely bounce back from this defeat.”

Last season, Mbekweni Cosmos managed to beat Mbekweni United twice. Cosmos beat their rivals 1-0 in the first round of the Metropolitan League, after which they beat them on penalties (5-3) in the Mayoral Cup tournament.
