Mother and son die

RESIDENTS of the Heights flats in Gouda are still being haunted by the cries for help of a mother and her paralysed son, who burnt to death on Sunday night. The fire started in a room in a flat where Margaret Messias (56) and her son Winston (24) were staying on the second floor of the derelict apartment building. Residents were awoken by their cries for help, but were not able to enter the flat. After members of the fire brigade had doused the flames, the charred remains of mother and son were discovered. The cause of the fire has not yet been established, but it is suspected that a curtain caught alight from a candle.
