Workshop on property

Workshop on property

2009-01-29

TWO new one-day workshops aimed at educating home owners, property investors and property professionals in the areas of property tax and letting residential property will be presented by the University of Cape Town (UCT).

Each workshop runs for one full day in Cape Town. The Residential Property Letting Workshop is on 27 February and the UCT Property Tax Workshop on 6 March.

The UCT property tax workshop is presented by David Clegg, the former national technical director (tax) at Ernst & Young South Africa.

It is designed to lead both relative newcomers as well as experienced property professionals through the complexities of the income tax, capital gains tax (CGT), VAT and other legislation that affects them.

Property transactions and their accompanying financial arrangements are generally of high value and often of high risk.

Knowing the tax consequences is critical in evaluating profitability and overall risk, yet many property owners, developers and managers do not fully understand the tax laws which relate to their businesses.

The UCT residential letting workshop is presented by Salim Patel, chairperson of the Western Cape Rental Housing Tribunal, and Prof Graham Paddock, a sectional title property expert.

The letting of residential property is an increasingly complex task for both landlords and letting agents, requiring detailed knowledge of the relevant Acts, the role of the Rental Housing Tribunal, a thorough knowledge of the relevant Common Law principles and an overall understanding of the South African legal system.
