Land claimants paid out
2009-01-29
AFTER waiting for ten years, 42 of the Sakkieskamp land claimants were paid restitution earlier this month. A total of R760 152 was paid out to the claimants (an average of R25 580 each) by the Land Claims Commission at Mbekweni Primary on 7 January. To date, 930 claims have been settled, while 99 claims still await payment to people who were forcibly removed from the Sakkieskamp squatter camp in Wellington in the 1960’s. These people have all laid land claims with the Land Claims Commission, and many have settled for cash payments instead of land. According to a spokesman for the Land Claims Commission, payment was delayed due to allegations of fraud by some claimants made at the end of 2005, which had to be investigated before payments could be resumed. This caused long delays. There were also many problems with documentation supporting the claims. The last payments are expected to be finalised before the middel of this year, bringing total payouts for Sakkieskamp to R9 mill- ion. Claimants who have not waived their claim to land, are to be accommodated on municipal land to the north of the N1 near Klapmuts. * Out of a total of 79 other claims lodged in Wellington, ten are still awaiting settlement.
