EDUCATORS are invited to attend a workshop on food gardens at PC Petersen Primary School in Pniel on Tuesday.

The Woolworths Trust Eduplant offers the free Permaculture food-gardening workshop in association with the Department of Education. Facilitated by programme co-ordinators, Food & Trees for Africa, the one-day workshops are exciting hands-on learning experiences.

Educators can expect an enjoyable time with group interaction and experiential exercises. Workshop topics include natural resource mapping, recycling design, water harvesting, soil improvement, as well as how to involve learners in the school’s living, learning laboratory.

Once they have designed and developed their food gardens at their schools, educators can enter their projects in the annual Woolworths Trust EduPlant competition where they stand to win a number of prizes presented at the final in Gauteng.

Experience has shown that community food gardens can make an important difference to both urban and rural communities who suffer from food shortages and inadequate nutrition.

A thriving Permaculture food garden at schools provides hungry children with fresh produce – improving both the quantity and quality of nutrition available to them.

Educators become food security champions in their community by teaching others how to establish community food gardens and promote food production. Schools learn a practical and satisfying way to live within the limits of nature, reaping the benefits of producing good food while saving resources and recycling waste.

For more information and to be part of the programme, contact Joanne Rolt at FTFA on 011 803 9750 or email her at joanne@trees.org.za.
