Motion delayed

Motion delayed

2009-02-05

AFTER several weeks of uncertainty on the status of office bearers of the Drakenstein Municipal Council, the attempt of the DA coalition to submit a vote of no confidence at today’s council meeting has been blocked.

According to Ronald Brand of the Freedom Front Plus, the office of the Speaker, has indicated that the agenda for this week’s monthly meeting in the council chamber is “too long”.

The meeting has been delayed since last week.

The motion submitted by the Freedom Front and ACDP will now be the only agenda point at a special meeting that will be held on 12 February next week.

The venue has not yet been announced.

Following the by-elections in December, the ANC has lost its majority in the Council.

The DA and its coalition partners require 31 votes for the motion of no confidence.

The ANC currently has 26 councillors, supported by three NPP councillors, while the DA has 22 seats, supported by the ID (5), the VF+ (1) and the ACDP (1).

It is not yet clear whether the two councillors of the WCC will support the motion.
