Excellent results at Summer Series
2009-02-12
DURING the final Boland Athletics Summer Series, organised by Paarl Athletics Club at the Dal Josaphat Stadium, the spectators were entertained with excellent performances in track and field. One of the highlights of the evening was the challenge in the sprints for boys. In the first Summer Series event held on 28 January, Henrico Bruintjies from Athletics Alive ran the 100m (boys’ u.15) in a time of 10,80 seconds, equalling the Boland u.15 100m record set by Mzwandile Qashani in 2008. On 4 February Qashani, from Mbekweni Athletics Club, responded by running the 100m youth boys in a time of 10,6 seconds - one of the fastest times this year in SA. The Boland Athletics Pole Vault Academy athletes also showed true competitive spirit when they had to jump in almost gail force winds. Christiaan Norman from Paarl Athletics Club showed character by clearing the bar in an excellent 4,65m which is one of the best performances this year in SA. Cornel Fredericks, the current boys u.19 SA Champion in 400m hurdles, also showed he was in great shape. He won the 400m men’s race in a time of 49,9 seconds. Also significant was the performance of 15-year-old Lee-Ray Bitterhout from Athletics Alive, who ran the 400m in 50,6 seconds. Jacques Pretorius also managed to break the four minute barrier in the 1500m for men. He finished the 1500m in an excellent time of 3:54.2. Bevan Hendon (high jump men, 2,10m), Shaun Owen (HJ boys u.15, 1,95m), Janet Wienand (100m women 12,2 seconds), Ilze Liebenberg (400m women, 58,1 seconds), Charne Augustyn (400m girls u.15, 61,5 seconds), and Marycka Brits (200m girls’ u.17, 25,9 seconds) also performed well.
