Surprises at MTB Challenge
2009-02-12
FAT tyre fanatics are in for a few surprises at this year’s Cape Argus Pick n Pay Mountain-bike Challenge at Boschendal on 1 March. Meurant Botha, trail builder and co-organiser of the event, has made a few adjustments to the route. “The biggest change for 2009 is moving the starting line,” says Botha. “This will enable us to eliminate the first tar road section, which will make the ride safer.” The 35km route, first launched in 2008, will also benefit from some improvements. “Last year the 35km riders laboured a bit on the big climb, causing the 55km riders to catch up to them which resulted in some congestion,” says Botha. “The 35km will now proceed straight into the climbing section and we expect them to clear the course before the fastest 55km riders arrive. “Also, I think many of these riders realise that the 35km is not for beginners and they’d rather choose the fun 26km option, resulting in fewer back markers. The 35km is actually tougher than the 55km, every kilometre of the way.” If you’re not participating, be sure to enjoy a picnic at the magnificent Boschendal Wine Estate whilst sipping on a splendid Sauvig-non Blanc. There is a very limited number of late entries available. Phone 021-884-4752 for enquiries.
