Tour de Boland around the corner

2009-02-19

THE Boland Cycling Union is proud to announce that the third annual Tour de Boland will be hosted around Paarl from Wednesday 25 February to Saturday 28 February.

This year the organisers have extended the tour to four days of racing.

Riders will compete over four days in four stages, starting with a 2,7 km Hill Climb Individual Time Trial at the Language Monument, Paarl. The first rider of the Hill Climb Individual Time Trial will start at 15:00.

Stage two will be over a distance of 124km, stage 3 will be 125 km long and stage four will be over a distance of 120 km.

Stage 4 will be a great stage for spectators to watch the finish that will be on the summit of the old Du Toit’s Kloof Pass.

The tour is open to Juniors, Under 23’s, Elites and Veterans. The country’s top Juniors will participate at this year’s tour as the selectors will also be present.

From the start of the first Tour de Boland in 2007, the main emphasis was, and still is, on the development of upcoming young cyclists. The tour serves to give youngsters the opportunity to gain valuable experience in multi-day racing.

That is also why the organisers accept individual entries from Juniors, u.23’s, Elites as well as Veterans.

This tour is growing immensely and top riders are expected to participate.

On the afternoon of the last day, 28 February, the riders will also have a chance to compete in a Criterion in their respective age categories, under 10 to Veterans. This event will start at 16:00 at the Paarl Town Hall. The first categories will be the scholars.

Prize money will be up for grabs and the entries are free. Registration will be from 13:30.

The Criterion will not be part of the Tour de Boland and will have separate prize money for all categories.

The Tour de Boland will utilise routes in the areas of Wemmershoek, Simondium, Lady Loch roads, R45 and R44 roads, Hermon road, R301 from Wellington to Paarl, also the Main Street in Paarl near the Town Hall, Market Street, Faure Street as well as Du Toit’s Kloof Pass.

Motorists are asked to be aware of the riders on the road during the time of the tour.
