Première in Paarl of A Song for Mandela
2005-08-04
YOUNG Boland musicians, many from the townships, have been practising hard in preparation for two special symphony concerts - where they will perform the world première of A Song for Mandela.
The work was composed specially for learners of the Frank Pietersen Music Centre in Paarl by international conductor Prof Dr Alun Francis from Berlin.
The already well-rehearsed young musicians are now refining their performances under Prof Dr Francis, who arrived in the country a few days ago.
The reason for all the excitement is that the Frank Pietersen Music Centre is celebrating its 35th anniversary. And the two Youth Symphony Orchestra concerts in Paarl’s Town Hall on 19 and 20 August intend to celebrate this considerable milestone with flair.
Various music groups of the Centre will be showcased, while the main part of the programme will be performed by the Youth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Alun Francis.
Works which will be performed are arrangements of well-known orchestra works such as Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, ‘Marche Slave’ by Tchaikovsky, and excerpts from Porgy and Bess by Gershwin, including the famous ‘Summertime’.
Francis will conduct his own composition dedicated to Dr Mandela. This work is composed for symphony orchestra, African percussion instruments, jazz instruments, choir and a vocal soloist.
