Clean up our act
2005-08-04
I AGREE with Magriet Smit (“From Paarl to Bangkok” 28 July) that most South Africans have become lazy after the elections of 1994.
Most of them think the Government owes them. No way - we should clean up our act.
I wonder what would happen if our government stopped all the grants they are giving the people.
Government should impose a rule that all working individuals should save at least R100 from the salary, invest it or take out life cover of R100 000 for R150 or less. You must put at least R150 away from your salary every month to save for the future.
Less people would beg and queue for grants.
You don’t need to earn R10 000 to save or invest. Even if you put away only a little money early, the better the outcome you’ll get from your investment.
A child should be playing at the playground (if you’ve still got any in Paarl) and not beg on street corners.
South Africans should take pride in themselves and not wait for Government hand-outs.
