Dog owners, please consider your neighbours

Dog owners, please consider your neighbours

2009-02-26

I HAVE been living in Paarl going on five years now, and I still cannot believe the attitude of so many dog-owners in this town!

The number of dogs that run the streets all times of the day and night astounds me - not to mention those owners who simply just let their dogs bark all day and night long.

I love animals, have two big dogs myself, and when my neighbours complained to me, I DID something about it out of consideration for them. It seems I am mostly alone in this town with this attitude.

A lady down the road from me has two black dogs, yes, you know who you are. They lie on the streets all day and chase cars going by. I of course do not want to hurt them and swerve to miss the poor neglected animals. As we all know this is dangerous driving practice.

Well, I approached the dear and she simply refused to accept responsibility for the animals and their street-hunting antics. She said that they jump over her puny little fence and really, what did I expect her to do about it?

She knows its a problem (others have also probably complained to her). My answer to that was simply, ‘make your fence higher’ - duh!

She refused and told me to drive slower - there was nothing she was prepared to do about her dogs!

I wonder what she would say if her dogs were the cause of someone’s injury or even death!

Do the right thing man, keep your dogs locked away - as the law states! There really should be stricter enforcement of these laws and hefty fines for those, like this lady, who refuse to respect the law!
