FOUR teams from Paarl Soccer Club will take part in the Coca-Cola Western Cape 4-a-side Soccer Tournament, an initiative of Sport Against Crime South Africa, on Saturday at Gustrouw sports field in Strand.

Twenty u.13 and u.15 teams will participate in the tournament in support of the Fifa Confederation Cup that starts on 14 June, as well as the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

According to the president of Sport Against Crime, Vincent Daniels, “it is one of the biggest tournaments with the aim of using sport to keep children away from drugs and violence.”

Daniels was the technical assistant of South Africa during the Homeless World Cup, which took place in 2006.

“The rules for the 4-a-side tournament will be the same as that of the Homeless World Cup,” says Daniels.

“Each team will consist of seven players, with four players taking the field at a time.”

Top Safa referees will be at the tournament to assist, with Mark Aloys and Keith Sauls of Kids Off Street - a soccer organisation to help keep children off the streets - will also lend their assistance.

“Sport against Crime will travel from town to town to market how to fight crime with sport,” says Daniels. “We are very glad that Tony Litchfield of Paarl Soccer Club got involved.”

Sport Against Crime does not only support soccer, but most sporting codes in South-Africa, including rugby, cricket, netball, volleyball and indoor games.
