Tour de Boland hits Paarl Valley
2009-02-26
THE stage is set for an exciting 2009 Tour de Boland, organised by the Boland Cycling Union this week. Since 2007 the Tour de Boland Cycle Tour has had some positive growth. The tour started as a three day regional tour and this year the organisers boast national as well as international riders. The Tour de Boland received a record number of 155 entries for this year’s tour. Spectators will be treated to some great action and local cyclists will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience. The riders already set off in the first stage yesterday, a 2,7km Hill Climb Individual Time Trial at the Taalmonument in Paarl. Here the climbers would definitely have put in a 100% effort to get a good lead on time as the tour will be decided on the best overall time. Today the riders will tackle stage 2 over a distance of 124 km. Riders will start at the Florida Farm Stall on the R45 (Malmesbury Road) outside Wellington at 09:00. Riders will travel to Hermon and Riebeek West and will return to the farm stall on the R45 road. Before the riders finish at the farm stall, they will complete three laps of the Lady Loch circuit. Tomorrow riders will start at 09:00 on Voor Paardeberg Road (pass Boland Agricultural School). The riders will complete five laps of the Voor-Paardeberg circuit. On Saturday the Tour de Boland will end with a spectacular mountain-top finish on the old Du Toit’s Kloof Pass. It is believed that the tour winner will be decided on this stage. The stage starts at Boland Cricket Stadium in Langenhoven Avenue, Paarl, and riders will travel in the direction of Simondium and complete a 127 km loop on the outskirts of Paarl. On Saturday afternoon the organisers will host criterion racing for all age categories (u.12 to veterans), starting at the Paarl Town Hall in the Main Street. Riders will compete around a circuit of approximately 1,1km. This includes Faure Street, Main, Market as well as Breda Streets. This will be exciting racing and very much a spectator friendly event. The organisers will charge no entry fee for this event and prize money will be up for grabs. All motorists are kindly requested to be on the look-out for cyclists participating in the Tour de Boland on the roads of Paarl and surrounding areas over this period.
