PAARL CRICKET CLUB beat neighbour, Berg River by four wickets at the Parys Fields in Paarl on Saturday.

The visitors only managed 128 runs for the loss of ten wickets after being asked to bat in conditions favouring the seam bowlers.

After 40 overs they had 120/5 on the scoreboard. During the next three overs they managed to score only eight runs for the loss of five wickets, with Clayton August (3/30) the main destroyer. Earlier Ultalyn Ernstzen (3/9) and Clint Philander (2/18) destroyed the top order of Berg River.

D Isaacs (30, 2x4) and C Manuel (30*, 3x4) were the top scorers for the visitors.

The home side was shocked by the visitors when they lost three wickets for just five runs in the first three overs of their innings.

Curtis Fourie and Franco Marais added 40 runs for the fourth wicket to stabilise the innings before Marais lost his wicket.

Lynal Jansen entered the scene and added 35 runs in 7 overs for the fifth wicket, before skying the ball to mid on.

Captain Ernstzen joined Fourie (39, 4x4) who lost his wicket soon afterwards.

With 4 overs left of the thirty needed to get a bonus point, Paarl had to score a further 21 runs. They reached the target in 29,5 overs when Ernstzen (35*, 5x4) hit a boundary.

Paarl II (223/9) beat Berg River II (159/10) by 64 runs at Weltevrede. Darryl Hendricks (25, 3x4), Kurt Martin (36, 2x4) Michael Leask (34, 4x4) and Alex Wilson (35*, 2x4) were Paarl’s main contributors with the bat.

D de Kock (2/26) and K Adams (2/38) were the best bowlers for the home side.

Elton du Plessis (2/42), Alfredo Adams (2/27) and Leask (4/30) restricted the home side to 159/10. J Cupido (29), D de Kock (34) and K Adams (41) all tried in vain to reach the target of 224 runs.

Paarl I and II is playing against Malmesbury this weekend. Paarl III has a bye while Paarl IV is waiting on Boland to announce the semi-finalist in the 3rd league.
