Excellent performances at athletics meetings

MORE than 5000 youth and junior athletes competed on Saturday in the five regional athletics meetings in Stellenbosch, Malmesbury, Ceres, Caledon, Vredendal and Worcester respectively. They all had one goal in mind; to qualify for the 2009 Boland Youth and Junior Track and Field Championships from 27 to 28 February at the Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch. At each of the regional meetings the athletes achieved excellent performances In Stellenbosch in particular, where the Central High Schools Athletics Meeting took place, the spectators were entertained with several performances of national standard. The performances of the sprinters in particular had the crowd on their feet several times. In the 100m boys 17, no less than six athletes ran faster than 11 seconds, with Mzwuandile Qashani winning in a brilliant time of 10,6 seconds. In the 100m boys 19 the race was even more exciting with Curt Ruiters and Garth Arentz finishing jointly first in an excellent time of 10,5 seconds. Not to be outdone by the boys, the girls performed equally well with Melissa Hewitt running the 100m girls 19 race in a time of 11,9 seconds. In the other regions several excellent performances were also recorded. In Worcester Taylia Visagie (high jump girls 13) performed a world class performance by clearing the high jump cross bar at 1,68m. Also in Worcester, Dean Swart won in the boys 19 category the 100m (10,80 seconds), 200m (21,80seconds) and 400m (51,20 seconds). In the West Coast Region, Zelda Schultz finished in the 5000m in 27:37.6, the fastest time this year in South Africa. The first events at Coetzenburg start at 12:00 on Friday.
