Housing competition

AN International Housing Innovation Competition will be launched in Wellington by the National Minister of Housing on 5 March, to facilitate the construction of housing in the squatter area Noodkamp in Wellington. The aim of the competition is to explore alternative building materials, as brick and mortar construction have become too slow and expensive to meet sustainable housing targets. Drakenstein Municipality is to be a partner in the project by making available 40 erven for the short-listed companies to build their houses, which will thereafter be sold. The competiton intends to draw participants from countries such as China, India, Canada and more. Absa together with National Ministry of Housing, National Home Builders Regulatory Council (NHBRC), National Housing Finance Co-operation (NHFC), Department of Public Enterprises, Africon and the University of Pretoria are involved in the project. The competition will be launched on 5 March at the Noodkamp site, when entry forms will be symbolically handed over to ambassadors of various countries to generate internation- al interest and entries in the competition.
