Shock after armed robbery at bar
2005-08-04
ARMED robbers made off with R140 000 when they raided a liquor store near the Huguenot railway station on Monday morning.
The employees of the Standard Bar in Jan van Riebeeck Drive are still in shock after the threat to their lives.
Four armed men locked the assistants in a toilet while forcing owner Riaan Laubscher to open the safe.
He was then bound with cable ties from wine boxes and left on the floor.
Laubscher managed to free himself and summoned help.
“The robbery had been planned with precision,” a police spokesman said, “even to parking the getaway car with a driver in Klein Drakenstein Drive.
“That way a red traffic light would not hamper their escape to the east.”
The cream-coloured VW Jetta in which the robbers arrived, was stolen in Wynberg last week.
It matches an identical Jetta belonging to a couple in Mountain View, Paarl.
The robbers’ vehicle had also been fitted with similar Paarl numberplates.
“That’s how they don’t attract attention, by using a car apparently well-known in the area,” Insp Julia Claasen said.
“And once the chase is on, having a similar vehicle on the road can lead investigators astray.
"Following information that leads to innocent bystanders, gives the robbers a head start.”
It was later established that the robbers had switched cars at approximately 08:30 at the Gemsbok Flats in Chicago.
Information about the dark-skinned robbers and the car in which they escaped, will be appreciated, investigating officer Capt Klaas Cloete (807-4000) said.
