Advanced wine course
2009-03-05
A LECTURER at Stellenbosch University’s Department of Viticulture and Oenology, Charl Theron, has launched a new four-week short course for people who wish to develop skills in advanced wine appreciation. Theron, who worked for KWV for over 30 years, is also the course convener for the Stellenbosch University certificate course in Wine Evaluation. This short course in advanced wine appreciation includes a theoretical and practical module on berry tasting, which is a first for the wine industry in South Africa. “One of the challenging areas for many wine drinkers is the identification of faulty wines. We have included a tutored tasting of different degrees of the following wine faults: oxidation, mouldiness, volatile acidity, microbial spoilage, sulphur compounds and sulphur dioxide. “We hope to provide students with a thorough practical experience in the identification of these wine faults,” he says. This four-week course is offered through three weeks of distance learning via the Internet, combined with a one-day practical workshop held in Cape Town. It is suited to anyone with a keen interest in wine, both professionals and non-professionals alike. The next course begins on 30 March, with the practical workshop being held on 20 April. Registrations close on 20 March. Contact Candice Jooste on 021-683-3633.
