A YOUNG man died in Mbekweni on Sunday evening, when he crashed at high speed with his scooter.

According to eye-witnesses, Mahlomula Mani (27) was speeding along Phinzi Street, Phola Park, at 21:30.

He hit one of the traffic circles in the road, and lost control of the Vuka scooter.

He skidded approximately 30 metres along Phinzi Street, before colliding with a fence. He reportedly died instantly from severe head injuries.

Mani worked as a shift manager at the Red Mountain Spur in the Paarl Mall.

* The driver of a vehicle which killed a young boy on Friday afternoon, sped away from the accident scene.

Sipho Gxowa (13) of Mbekweni died instantly on impact while crossing Jan van Riebeeck Drive, when he was struck by the vehicle. The driver did not stop and fled the scene of the accident.

The driver’s conscience however eventually got the better of him, and he gave himself up at Mbekweni police station on Tuesday.

A case of culpable homicide, as well as negligent driving, will now be investigated.
