Boland team ready for SA senior track and field champs

BOLAND ATHLETICS selected an experienced team to represent the province at the 2009 SA Senior Track and Field Championships that will take place at the Coetzenburg Stadium, Stellenbosch, from 13 to 14 March. “A team of 83 athletes, 41 athletes more than in 2008, were selected with the mission to improve on the record total of medals won by Boland Athletics at the 2008 SA Senior Track and Field Championships,” said Dr Harold Adams, President of Boland Athletics. Eleven of the fourteen athletes that won medals in 2008 are still available to represent Boland Athletics. They are Ruzanne Harris (20km Walk), Janize Josephs (Long Jump), Janus Roberts (Shot Put), Robert Oosthuizen (Javelin Throw), Johan Kruger (Hammer Throw), Nicola Offner (Heptathlon), Wilhelm vd Vyver (200m), Louw Smit (110mH), Ruan van Wyk (Pole Vault), Ross Jordaan (Shot Put) and Karin le Roux (Hammer Throw). The Boland senior team includes twelve athletes who won medals at the 2008 SA Youth and Junior Championships. They are Dean Swart (200m and 400m), Cornel Fredericks (400mH), Taahirah Cozain (PV), Brynn-Peter Kemp (DT and SP), Melissa Hewitt (100m and 200m), Raaghid Fredericks (800m), Bronwyn Campbell (HJ), Christiaan Norman (PV), Kurt Ruiters (100m), Anrich Visser (400m), Carli Gey van Pittius (100mH), Jan-Louis Nienaber (PV). To strengthen the team even further, Janet Wienand, the 2008 400mH Champion, moved from Free State to the Boland recently and is also part of the Boland team. Athletes from other provinces, who won medals in 2008 and migrated to the Boland recently and who are now part of the Boland Team, are Stephan Brits (2008 IAAF World Youth Championships silver medallist in Long jump) and his sister Maryke Brits (double gold medallist in the 2008 SA Youth Championships). Sors Joubert, the 2007 Decathlon Champion, has also recovered from his injuries that kept him out of the 2008 athletics season. He is looking forward to regain his title as the 2009 national champion in the Decathlon. Of the seventeen provinces that competed at the 2008 SA Senior Track and Field Championships, Boland Athletics finished fifth on the medal tally.
