THE Swiss dominated Sunday’s Cape Argus Pick n Pay Mountain Bike Challenge at the Boschendal Wine Estate in scorching temperatures. Martin Fanger and Esther Süss, both from Switzerland, were the first male and female to cross the 55km finish line. Erik Kleinhans (GT Eduloan Maties) from Stellenbosch finished in second place, with fellow Matie, Johnny Kritzinger (Schwinn), coming in third. David Bellairs, Co-Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, described the race conditions as “very hot, dry and dusty, overall very testing.” Despite the extreme heat, a record number of 4 200 cyclists took part in the MTB Challenge, making it the country’s biggest mountain biking event. The complete race results are as follows: In the 55km men’s race, Martin Fanger came first with a time of 2:12:45, with Erik Kleinhans coming second (2:14:47). In the 55km women, Ester Süss came first with 2:35:46. Jacques Janse van Rensburg won the 35km men’s race in 1:34:13 and Amanda van Wyk won the women’s 35km race in 2:11:34. The men’s 26km race was won by Marc Puzey (1:11:29) and the women’s 26km race was won by Lisa de Wet (1:44:46). Louw Kriel won the 13km men’s race (35:17) and Jess Struben won the 13km women’s race (56:42).
