Vineyards looks ready
2009-03-05
A YOUNG Vineyards rugby team surprised friend and foe on Saturday when they beat Newtons 36-14 on their home ground. Newtons, which competes in the Boland Super B league, was stunned by the performance of the “new” Vineyards team, comprising mostly of 18-year-old players. Vineyards entered the break on 7 all, but the injection of Thaamir Moerat (number 8), Zarier Nackerdien (lock) and Aslam Abrahams (hooker) in the second half sparked the youngsters into a try scoring frenzy. The forwards dominated, with Moerat keeping his side on the front foot, gaining 30 metres at times with his powerful runs. It was the old firm of backline players who provided the points on the day though. Vineyards’ try scorers were Shukri Moerat (scrumhalf), Niyaaz Abrahams (centre), Anwar-Shuhail Moerat (wing), Adlee Moerat (centre) and Yagya Crook (Lock). Enrico Jordaan added eleven points with the boot. On Saturday Vineyards takes on Evergreens in Wellington.
