Boland team to SA youth and junior championships

BOLAND ATHLETICS selected a strong team of 65 youth and junior athletes to represent Boland Athletics at the 2009 SA Youth and Junior Track and Field Championships that will take place in Pretoria from 27 to 28 March. No less than thirteen athletes in the team won medals last year. They are Dean Swart, Cornel Fredericks, Taahirah Cozain, Melissa Hewitt, Christiaan Norman, Kurt Ruiters, Anrich Visser, Inge Kotze, Cornel Fredericks, Carli Gey van Pittius, Jan-Louis Nienaber and Ruaan van Wyk. These athletes will hope to repeat their performances this year. During the 2009 SA Youth and Junior Track and Field Championships the Boland Athletes will also try to qualify for the IAAF World Youth Championships in July. The Junior Athletes will try to qualify for the African Junior Championships in June. It is very important for the Boland Athletes to do well at the SA Youth and Junior Track and Field Championships, says Dr Harold Adams, President of Boland Athletics. “Athletics South Africa is currently looking for new talent to prepare for the 2012 Olympic Games and the National Selectors will be monitoring the performances of the athletes at the 2009 SA Youth and Junior Track and Field Championships carefully.” To help the athletes in their preparation, Boland Athletics selected all the junior athletes in the above-mentioned team to participate at the 2009 Yellow Pages Senior Track and Field Championships that will take place from 13 to 14 March in Stellenbosch. The youth athletes were selected for the Boland High Schools team that will participate at the Western Cape High Schools Championships at the Dal Josaphat Stadium on 21 March. Local athletes who were included in the team to the 2009 South-African Youth and Junior Track and Field Championships, are: Junior men - Kurt Ruiters (100m, Paarl BHS); Drikus Viljoen (110mH, Paarl Gym); Luvo Maniyonga (LJ and Triple Jump, Desmond Tutu); Rushwahl Samaai (Triple Jump, Paarl Gym); Jan-Louis Nienaber (PV, Paarl Boys’ High); Christian Norman (Pole Vault, Paarl Gym). Junior women - Melissa Hewitt (100m and 200m, La Rochelle). Youth boys - Lionel Abrahams (100m and Long Jump, Paarl BHS); Enrico Bruintjies (100m, Klein Nederburg SS); Mzwuandile Quashani (100m and 200m, Desmond Tutu SS); Leroy Bitterhout (400mH, Klein Nederburg SS). Youth girls - Ciani Loubser (200m, Hugenote HS); Jean-Marie Senekal (100mH and 400mH, Paarl Gym); Taahirah Kozain (Pole Vault, Paarl Gym); Jani Smit (PV, Paarl Gym); Kulthoom Gaidien (PV, Paarl GHS).
