What example is set by this municipal employee? 2009-03-19
AS a regular reader of the Paarl Post one cannot but be aware of the deterioration on all levels of the local administration which is gaining momentum - from shoddy service to ‘above the law’ behaviour by employees paid by the ratepayers.
On Sunday 8 March at 15:20, at the T-junction of Lady Grey Street joining Jan van Riebeeck I was waiting at the traffic light. As drivers turning right from Jan van Riebeeck into Lady Grey have the habit of jumping the robot against red, I usually hesitate before I go.
As the light turned green, a municipal bakkie with the registration number CJ 51126 approached the traffic light against red.
The driver without worries and probably with the inner conviction that he belongs to the selected and untouchable lot of municipality employees crossed the red robot in front of my car.
The driver and passengers did not appear to be dressed for work.
I wonder whether the millions of rands to be spent on drivers control systems will help?
Our municipal employees should set an example.Still full of hopeThe municipal spokesperson responds: Drivers of municipal vehicles are subject to traffic regulations just like any other motorist. They may only contravene regulations (e.g. parking on a road) in emergencies. Only vehicles fitted with signs may ignore a red traffic light. A process has been launched to fit all municipal vehicles with tracking systems indicating which route they travelled on a specific date and time. Transgressions of which we are informed, will be investigated, and steps taken against such employees.
