Experience for young riders

THE Yorkshire Neotel Academy riders have had exciting first hand experience of what it is like to live the life of a professional cyclist during the past week. The Neotel professional cycling team, based in Johannesburg, stayed in Paarl for the 2009 Tour de Boland and the Giro del Capo International tour. The Academy riders took the chance to support the team during the Tour de Boland that was hosted in and around Paarl over 4 days recently. The professionals also took the time despite their busy schedule to brief the riders about the ins and outs of competitive cycling and what it takes to become a top class rider. Nolan Hoffman and James Perry had some inspirational words to encourage the youngsters and wished them all of the best for their future cycling careers. On Friday 6 March, during the third leg of the Giro del Capo event in Paarl, the youngsters were all present at the finish to see Neotel’s Johann Rabie taking 2nd position on the podium. The youngsters also had a chance to meet the Western Cape Department of Sport’s MEC, Cameron Dugmore and received cycling tops from the Department of Sport for the 2009 Pick ’n Pay Cape Argus Cycle Tour. * Promising junior cyclist Avery Arendse travelled to Oudtshoorn for the SA Road Championships on Tuesday 10 March. The riders competed over a distance of 120 km. Garmin Junior and Christopher Jennings took the top podium position while Arendse took a well deserved 5th position. Great things are expected from Arendse in the future. Upcoming events include the PPA Final Road Summer league/Geard Pharmacy league in Malmesbury on 4 April and the SA Track Championships at the Bellville Velodrome from 9 to 13 April.
