Athletes shine at champs

BOLAND ATHLETICS was the host of the 2009 Yellow Pages SA Senior Track and Field Champs that took place at the Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch from 13 to 14 March. The Boland senior athletics team broke two Boland records and won a record amount of sixteen medals. Janet Wienand broke the 25-year-old 400m women’s hurdles record set by Bermien Oosthuizen in 1993. Janet’s winning time was 56,23. Luvo Maniyonga again set a new record by breaking his own triple jump record set at the 2009 Boland Junior Champs with a distance of 15,55m. Gold medals were won by Janet Wienand (400mH; 56,23), Janus Robberts (SP; 19,70m), Robert Oosthuizen (JT; 80,70m) and Zavion Kotze (Decathlon; 6414 points). Silver medals were won by Janet Wienand (100mH; 13,94), Cornel Fredericks (400mH; 50,25), Janice Josephs (LJ; 6,08m), Luvo Maniyonga (LJ; 7,28 and TJ; 15,55), Monique Malsamo (PV; 3,70m), Janus Robberts (DT; 56,53m), Johan Kruger (HT; 61,92) and the Boland 4x100m Relay Team (46,95). Bronze medals were won by Elmarco Matthews (TJ; 15,42), Johan du Plessis (PV; 4,80m), Willem le Roux (Decathlon; 5963 points). Boland Athletics set another record by enrolling 82 athletes for the Yellow Pages Champs. Last year 42 athletes represented Boland
