THE road intersection at Orleans Avenue and Jan van Riebeeck Drive in Paarl is a disaster waiting to happen!
It has become a lottery to either enter or cross Jan van Riebeeck Drive at that junction, especially during peak traffic hours.
Excessive speeds and risky driving behaviour in that vicinity exacerbate this already dangerous situation.
This is a plea to the Drakenstein Municipality to introduce preventative traffic calming measures at that junction.
A measure such as a three-way stop, with rumble strips on all three sides, is one example.
This means there is no need for synchronisation with the robots at the intersection with Meaker Street.
Such a measure is also extremely cost effective, as the Municipality is surely familiar with the costs of dealing with one serious motor vehicle crash.
Please calm the traffic down at the entrance of our suburb, as this will significantly increase the safety of all road users. This is the main access node to the rest of our town and we deserve the same traffic safety measures as in the predominantly white suburbs of Paarl.
Sammy DavidsThe municipal spokesperson responds: Our engineers have painted additional lines on the road to make the intersection safer. The traffic department is investigating the appointment of additional staff to assist with traffic regulation at this point during rush hour.
