Boland Summer Festival celebrates ten years!
2009-03-26
SINCE the Boland Summer Festival’s inception in 2000, the festival has lived up to every aspect of this definition and is still the most sought-after festival of its kind in the Boland. No one would have dreamed that the event, to be held this weekend at the Dal Josaphat Stadium, would gain momentum and accelerate to this degree. The weather is perfect this time of the year and alongside the venue and picturesque landscape, you couldn’t ask for a better setting. The atmosphere both during the day and night is fantastic which is why year after year people from all over make their way to the Paarl Valley. This periodic gathering for sale of goods, meeting with friends, exhibition of products, enjoyment of musical and other entertainment and feasting with family is a jovial retreat to the thousands of supporters who annually frequent our shores. This year’s festival will be held on 27, 28 and 29 March with the grand opening on Saturday evening at 19:00. Some of the dignitaries you can expect are MJC President Ml Ighsaan Hendricks, Premier Lynn Brown, Drakenstein Mayor Charmaine Manuel, the chairperson of the District Six Trust Anwar Naagia, and many more. One of the new additions to the festival in 2008 was the Fancy Pigeon Show. This event drew a lot of interest and will offer a bigger and better variety of bird species this year. Entrants from across the land will compete to find out who’s the fairest of them all. The fufi slide will also be back. Here you will have a birds-eye view of the entire field whilst gliding down a 100 metre cable from a five meter high tower. One of the new activities for the youth will be a Fun Zone, with inflatable entertainment like Jumping Castles, Giant Slides, Gladiator Obstacle and much more. Kids and adults alike will feel like they are in “outer space” when they dare a ride on the new Gyroscope. You will also be able to test your target -shooting skills in the Shooting Tunnel (new) and if heights are more your thing, then the Climbing Wall will be a true challenge! Another new ride will be the Rodeo Bull where the brave-hearted cowboys/girls would be able to test their riding skills! Another highlight to the event will be a Martial Arts Performance by the Saljun Wushu Academy. MJ Li is the current South African Kung Fu Champion and also ranked third in the world. Along with his teammates, they will perform incredible Kung Fu stunts using Tai Chi, King Spear, Chakka’s and many other weapon forms. They are currently training for the World Championship in Canada. The festival will not be the same without a fireworks display and on Friday and Saturday evening we will once again be painting the Boland sky with an awesome display. Residents of the surrounding area should please keep their animals safe around 21:00 on 27 and 28 March. Fireworks will last about ten minutes each evening. Some of the other activities you can expect will be quad bikes, pony rides, thrilling rides on the fun fair and live musical entertainment with artists such as the legendary Zane Adams. Vineyards Rugby Club will also rub shoulders against Rangers. The juniors will start in the morning and the main game will commence at 16:00 the Saturday afternoon. You will be able to pick and choose from over 130 stalls and exhibitions, including a variety of eats and a tea garden. There will 24 hour perimeter and terrain security as well as a neighbourhood watch which will ensure that vehicles are safe from harm. Full medical aid with doctors and nurses as well as an emergency safety officer will be on site over the weekend. Tickets for the festival are R12 (children under 12 years R6, pensioners R6 and vehicles R15). For enquiries, contact Sharifa Moerat on 072-800-9489 or Marwaan Moerat on 082-896-6957.
