Goodbye Paarl

Goodbye Paarl

2009-04-02

THESE words are uttered by international tourists and visitors: “Our next visit will definitely not be Paarl!”

At least not until law and order has been restored to the streets of Paarl, as anarchy now reigns.

Recently we had cyclist participants staying with us in the vicinity of the Parys Road. But they were robbed of a good night’s sleep whilst the illegal street racers and their spectators terrorised the night.

The Municipality speaks of going ‘green’ but the authorities do nothing about this absolute flagrant breaking of the law and total abuse of energy, petrol, clean air and noise.

The Municipality endeavours to host a soccer team for the World Cup, but does nothing whilst the entrance to Paarl and the Dal Josaphat and Boland Stadiums become a nightmare and danger to all road users - a situation that can only impact negatively on any preparations to host a team for the FIFA World Cup.

The illegal street racers are costing Paarl tens of thousands of rands (as well as losing valuable income from tourists). The police are called out to disperse this menace regularly on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday nights. The crowds are politely asked to disperse, just to return after the police have left.
