La Motte ranked top SA Chardonnay
2009-04-02
THE annual Chardonnay du Monde awards took place between 11 and 14 March at Saint-Lager, France. The La Motte Estate in Franschhoek has won a gold medal for their 2007 La Motte Chardonnay. They were also ranked best South African Chardonnay and came fourth in the top ten international category. Hein Koegelenberg, La Motte CEO, says, “We are extremely proud of being ranked the top South African Chardonnay. “The Chardonnay du Monde competition recognises the world’s best Chardonnay and is judged by expert international judges. The award that we won has a lot to do with the entire winemaking team at La Motte.” The Chardonnay du Monde International competition has progressively distinguished itself from other international competitions due to quality standards that are much stricter than normal. At the competition 923 wines are tasted from 37 countries by the 300 expert judges. Edmund Terblanche, La Motte’s winemaker, describes the wine as “showing a lot of complexity and evolving into layers of flavours without losing cultivar characteristics.” “The build-up to the 2007 season was virtually perfect for wine-making,” continues Edmund, “a cold winter, cool spring, summer rains and a dry start to 2007 all meant that this wine would be as special, if not more so, than previous vintages.” La Motte Chardonnay has a history to be proud of, having collected amongst others a South African Airways winelisting, a British Airways winelisting, four stars from John Platter on three occasions (1999, 2001 and 2005 vintage), as well as the Chardonnay du-Monde Gold for the 2004 and the Concours Mondial Bruxelles Gold for the 2005 vintage. The 2007 Chardonnay looks like it is following this tradition.
