BOLAND ATHLETICS have concluded their most successful season in history with the 2009 SA Youth and Junior Championships in Pretoria over the past weekend.

The team of 65 athletes from Boland Athletics won a total of 31 medals, including ten gold, thirteen silver and eight bronze medals.

In the process, Boland athlete Willem le Roux broke one SA Junior Record in one of the most gruelling of all sporting events - the Decathlon.

The Decathlon takes place over two days and the athletes have to participate in ten events over these two days. The events are 100m, Long Jump, Shot Put, Hammer Throw, 400m, 110m Hurdles, Discus Throw, Pole Vault, Javelin Throw and 1500m.

Five Boland records were also broken during the championships.

Shaun de Jager, Gerald Lakey, Dean Swart and Cornel Fredericks broke the junior men 4x400m relay record, Shaun de Jager broke the 16-year-old 400m boys 19 record, Maryke Brits broke the 19-year-old record in the Long Jump (girls 15), Nicola Offner broke the Heptahlon girls 19 record and the Boland junior women 4x400m relay team (consisting of Narusta van der Colff, Melissa Hewitt, Elene Lourens and Ilse Liebenberg), set a new record.

The Boland Athletes who won medals at the 2009 SA Youth and Junior Championships were:
