AS a regular reader of the Paarl Post one cannot but be aware of the deterioration on all levels of the local administration which is gaining momentum - from shoddy service to ‘above the law’ behaviour by employees paid by the ratepayers.
On Sunday 8 March at 15:20, at the T-junction of Lady Grey Street joining Jan van Riebeeck Drive, I was waiting at the traffic light.
As the light turned green for me, a municipal bakkie with the registration number CJ 51126 approached the traffic light against red.
The driver without worries and probably with the inner conviction that he belongs to the selected and untouchable lot of municipality employees crossed the red robot in front of my car. The driver and passengers did not appear to be dressed for work.
I wonder whether the millions of rands to be spent on driver’s control systems will help? Our municipal employees should set an example.

The municipal spokesperson replies: A supervisor in the parks department was behind the wheel and was on duty due to the fire on Paarl Mountain. According to the driver he crossed while the traffic light was orange, and it turned red only after he had entered the intersection.
