Business hive for Gouda creates opportunities
2009-04-16
THE Gouda small business hive of R600 000 was officially launched on Wednesday with a ceremony where small business entrepreneurs received their keys to their businesses. Drakenstein Municipality, as part of its economic development programme, has identified a critical need when it comes to the development of small businesses. The provision of basic business infrastructure and services plays a critical role in order to enhance the growth and development of SMMEs to steer them towards greater profitability The project that has been identified is the construction of a small business hive in Malva Street in Gouda, consisting of five units that will accommodate the entrepreneurs who have small businesses, but do not have the infrastructure to operate their businesses. The entrepreneurs run an internet café, a butchery, a tyre repair service, a funeral service and a fruit and vegetables store. The mayor of Drakenstein, Charmaine Manuel, emphasised how important job creation is for the Municipality. “It’s opportunities like these that people should take to become financially independent and let their business grow in order to create more jobs in their communities for their own people,” said the mayor. A fair selection process was followed to ensure that the beneficiaries who will occupy these units are the ones who really need it. Business plans were called for from the public to ensure that everyone participates and were submitted to the Local Economic Development Section, and five beneficiaries were selected to make the units the new home of their businesses. Additionally, the LED Section will offer the entrepreneurs a small business management course to ensure further sustainable development.
