THE new R14 million Thusong multipurpose centre in Silimela Street, Mbekweni, was officially opened by the Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Ntombizodwa Magwaza, on Saturday. This is the eighth government-funed centre to be opened in the Cape. In her keynote address the minister said that 19 of these centres will be established in the Western Cape and she emphasised the fact that the community has to take control of the cen-tre. “By adding a centre to every district municipality in the Western Cape, we can establish effective government services. “With this we can concentrate on the basic needs of the people. This is a people centred approach and the community has to make the best use of it,” she said. Mayor Charmaine Manuel added that the community had to guard against people who want to vandalise this facility, which will be a one-stop centre for government services.
