THE sprint sensation of Desmond Tutu Secondary, Mzwandile Qashani, is on his way to compete in the World Youth Championships in Italy after his breathtaking performances on the athletics track this year. As a 15-year-old, Mzwandile is all too familiar with the feeling of outsprinting his opponents, be it in the 100m or 200m sprinting events. He made his mark last year when he achieved one victory after another during the various athletics events where he competed. This year Mzwandile has continued to strike fear into his opponents, as the only thing that seems to be missing from a Qashani performance is the smoke that should be covering his tracks. Mzwandile kicked this year off with a third position in the boys100m during the Summer Series held at Dal Josphat Stadium - the same event where he set the 10,80 second record last year. Although his record was equalised by Kurtley du Plessis, Mzwandile bounced right back, running the 100m at the final Summer Series event in a spectacular time of 10,6 seconds. In February, during the Boland High Schools and Youth Championships at the Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch, Mzwandile was crowned the Boland champion in the 100m and 200m boys u.17, whereafter he was included in the Boland team to take part in the SA Youth and Junior Championships in Pretoria. During the Western Cape High Schools Athletics Championship at the Daljosaphat Stadium, Mzwandile won gold for Boland in the boys u.17 100m and 200m, followed by a silver medal in the boys u.17 200m during the SA Youth and Junior Champs. At the SA High Schools Athletics Championships in Durban, Mzwandile confirmed his class by winning gold in the boys u.17 200m.
