Endurance - a triumph of the human spirit

Endurance - a triumph of the human spirit

2009-04-30

AN extraordinary exhibition of the triumph of the human spirit will be displayed at the Hout Street Gallery at 19:30 on Thursday 7 May.

It consists of a DVD slideshow presentation of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914-1917 which is presented by Hans van Heukelum, himself an expert on the Antarctic. Shackleton’s expedition is today still regarded as one of the great feats of human perseverance.

The story began in the summer of 1914 when Shackleton and his crew set sail from England with the intention of being the first to cross the Antarctic continent from coast to coast, passing through the South Pole en route. After five months they reached the freezing Weddell Sea and were within sight of land when their ship, the Endurance, became trapped in the pack ice.

Nine months later, the ship was finally crushed, leaving the crew stranded on the drifting ice floe. What followed is one of the most remarkable survival stories in the history of human exploration.

Based on these original prints, an Imax production was made 5 years ago but has never been shown in South Africa. Unique Destinations, a company specialising in polar voyages has procured by special permission the DVD based on the Imax film and is proud to share it with you on the 90th anniversary of this very heroic expedition.

This event is a fund-raiser for the Island of Hope Centre for abused women and children, thus entrance will be a donation to this non-profit organisation. Contact Emma Kriel on 083-406-0106 or 021-872-5563.
