2009-04-30

THE Golden Games of the Western Cape Department of Social Development are held annually to promote sporting activities among older persons.

In order to select a Cape Winelands District team, senior citizens from service centres, clubs and old age homes in Paarl and Worcester will compete against each other on 27 May at Dal Josaphat Stadium, Paarl. The public is welcome to attend the event.

Sports activities for the Games include the duck walk; dress-up; passing the ball; 100m run; 500m brisk walk; 800m run; 400m relay; rugby ball throw; jukskei; ring the stick; ball pass and kick; hit the tin; ball relay; target throwing; goal shooting; and pegging washing pegs.

Soccer will be introduced as a new event for men only.

Sport activities build up to the provincial event when six district teams will compete against each other from 23 to 25 September at Dal Josaphat Stadium, Paarl, hosted by Cape Winelands.

Older Persons Assistants employed by the sixteen district offices of the Department of Social Development around the Western Cape Province play a significant role in terms of mobilising, training and supporting older persons and service centres and clubs for the Games.

The winners at the Provincial Golden Games event will compete as the Western Cape provincial team in the Interprovincial Event from 28 September to 1 October against an Eastern Cape team in Port Elizabeth.

For more information about the Golden Games you can contact Chrina Barendse, the Paarl District Co-ordinator of the Golden Games, on 021-871-1682.
