CYCLISTS of the Yorkshire Neotel Cycling Club participated in the recent South African Track Cycling Championships hosted at the Bellville Velodrome over the Easter weekend. It seems if the Jantjies name in cycling has been revived, seeing that the talented Jean-Claude Jantjies is following in the footsteps of the great Jantjies cyclists, like Jackson, Koos, Jan Bull and Boet. Jean-Claude competed in the u.14 category at the championships. Jantjies, a real speedster, won bronze in the 500m scratch and 500m time trial. In the 1 500m scratch race he finished in second position, but was relegated to third after an appeal. The Yorkshire trio of Jantjies, Graeme Ockhuis and newcomer Angelo Diedericks were very aggressive in the u.14 points race and attacked their competition on a regular basis. This worked out well for them and they took the top three positions in the last sprint lap. With all the points Janjies collected during the race, he finished in a well deserved second position for the silver medal. Another youngster that brought back some heavy metal was Luc Green. He took the bronze medal in the u.12 500m time trial event. The club’s top talented junior rider, Avery Arendse, took home a well deserved bronze medal in the 1 500m scratch race. Arendse also showed some aggressive riding in the junior scratch and Points races. The previous weekend Arendse travelled to Midmar Kwa-Zulu Natal to participate in the 4-day National Junior Tour. He rode a goods third stage over a distance of 120km, the longest stage of the tour, and finished in a well deserved 6th position. Arendse finished in 12th position overall. The club currently has a lot of youth riders that are also newcomers to this wonderful sport. Development is also an integral part of the club’s operations and opportunities are created for youngsters to take up the sport. Yorkshire Neotel Cycling Club firmly believes in a hands-on approach towards the coaching and training of these youngsters. The club’s youth riders (ages 10 to 16) are now preparing for the South African Road Championships that will take place at the end of May in Oudtshoorn.
