2009-05-07
THE Western Province Open Road Championships in all the various categories were contested on Saturday on the Paardeberg circuit, just outside Paarl. The youngsters of the Yorkshire Neotel Cycling Club were again very prominent at the championships and rose to the occasion. In the u.12 category the young Luc Green managed to step on the podium when he finished in third position. The race was over a distance of 25km. The u.14 race was contested over 40km and the Yorkshire trio of Jean-Claude Jantjies, Graeme Ockhuis and Angelo Diedericks rode a very aggressive race. They were motivated to win the u.14 title for Yorkshire. In the sprint to the finish, Jantjies (top u.14 sprinter of Yorkshire Neotel), passed Brent van Rooyen (Rhadsport) to convincingly take the u.14 title. Ockhuis was just pipped on the line for third position. The junior event was over a distance of 105km and Yorkshire Neotel was represented by Avery Arendse and Joshwil Davids. Arendse was also the defending Champion of the Junior title after he won it in 2008. With the dash to the finish Arendse made the first move with 1km to go. Johan van Gensellen (Toyota Supercycling) was on Arendse’s wheel and he just managed to beat Arendse to the line. Arendse managed to finish in a well deserved second place. Joshwil Davids (first year junior) is also finding some good form lately and he managed to finish the race in the main bunch. Garth Thomas won the u.23 Elite event over a distance of 135km. Yorkshire Neotel rider, Reginald Benjamin, finished the race in the main bunch.
