Vineyards end Blues’ unbeaten run
2009-05-07
THE Vineyards Rugby Club kept their momentum after last week’s 31-0 win over Simondium and gathered another four log points on Saturday thanks to a hard fought 26-22 victory over the unbeaten Lower Paarl Blues. Flyhalf Enrico Jordaan opened Vineyards’ account with a penalty in the fourth minute, but seconds later Blues scored to go into an early 7-3 lead. Jordaan replied with a 40 metre drop goal to make the score 6-7 after ten minutes of play. After the restart, Vineyards’ prop Marko Kok dived over the tryline in the corner, scoring from a midfield break that was created by captain Adlee Moerat (centre), giving Vineyards a 13-7 lead. Lower Paarl were all over the park and caught Vineyards offside on numerous occasions. A yellow card to lock Arshad Abrahms did not help the men in maroon. Blues increased their tally by another nine points to go into the change room with a 16-13 lead. Seven minutes after the break Alvin Farmer (scrumhalf) scored for Vineyards, with Jordaan adding the two points for Vineyards to lead 20-16. A penalty and a drop kick by Blues gave them a 22-20 lead, but Jordaan added two more drop goals to give Vineyards a four point lead. With eighthman Thaamir Moerat in the sin bin, Blues gave it their all, but could not cross the line as Vineyards gutted out a hard fought 26-22 win. Blues II won 10-8, with Vineyards III winning 10-7. Blues will play Young Gardens, at Gardens Park, on Saturday.
