TRIOMF, the movie, can be seen at the Breytenbach Centre on Tuesday 12 May at 18:30.
Set in the poor white suburb of Triomf, which was built on the ruins of Sophiatown, this South African movie is based on the acclaimed book by Marlene van Niekerk. It is set in the run-up to the first democratic elections in 1994.
The son in the family turns 21 on the day of the election, and he has been promised a surprise... a ‘nice’ girl. The family is particularly dysfunctional, and the idea behind the present is to get the boy to move out.
Meanwhile, his friend, a black man, is looking forward to claiming their house right after the election. Tickets cost R20 and include a glass of wine. The movie is rated 18 (LSV). Contact 021-873-2786.
