THE Helmut Wilderer Muskat Barrique 2003 has won the Gold (Best in its class) medal at the 2005 International Wine and Spirits Competition in London.
It was the only grappa entry from around the world to win this accolade.
The Simondium-based Wilderer Distillery, established ten years ago to showcase the excellence of South African spirits, also took the Silver medal for the 2004 Helmut Wilderer Pinotage Barrique and Bronze medals for the Fynbos Herb-Bitter 2004 and the Williams Birne Pear Spirit 2004.
The distillery itself was awarded the prestigious “First Class Distillery” title and won a further five silver medals and one bronze for its spirits
* Wines from the Seidelberg Wine Estate in Agter Paarl also performed well at the Competition. The 2003 vintage Roland’s Reserve Merlot was their top performer with a “Best in class” Silver medal followed by the 2003 vintage Pinotage with a Silver medal.
The 2003 vintage Syrah was awarded a Bronze medal in its class, said estate owner Roland Seidel.
