THE question of the municipal law-enforcers has once again reared its head, with the parking bays in and around Lady Grey Street having become a free for all.
In the past years the Drakenstein Municipality eradicated the old parking meter system and replaced it, at great cost, with that of the ADO card system.
And it would be one of the duties of municipal law enforcers, who are the ‘strong-arm’ of the traffic department, to keep their eyes on this system.
But this has not been implemented, once again putting taxpayers’ money to waste.
The law enforcement squad was greeted with much enthusiasm when it was launched. After all, they were employed to patrol the streets of Paarl, enforcing the by-laws of the Municipality.
Apart from their duties as traffic wardens, they are supposed to keep an eye on, amongst others, the activities of hawkers in the CBD-area, and see to general complaints.
But this enthusiasm did not last, as the sightings of law enforcers on the streets dwindled, and they were noticeably assigned mainly to traffic directing duties.
Not only has the ADO card system become a white elephant, but our law enforcers too.
