WHO is going to walk away with the prestigious Landbouweekblad Woman Winemaker of the Year Award in 2009? Lorraine Immelman-Steyn, founder and organiser of this competition said that the competition continues to grow both in stature and significance, and has become a highlight on the South African wine calendar. “The number of entries grows annually, and the competition draws winemakers from established cellars, as well as smaller cellars in lesser known wine growing areas,” she said. The closing date for entries for the 2009 competition is Monday 6 July. The winner will be announced at a glittering ceremony at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West on Thursday 30 July. The Landbouweekblad Woman Winemaker of the Year Competition seeks more than just a good winemaker. In addition, the judges are searching for a true ambassador for the wine industry with a clear vision of her future and career goals, good business acumen and an excellent relationship with her co-workers, employer/s and employees. Because of this, judging takes place in two rounds – a blind tasting of the wines in round one, followed by in depth interviews with the top scoring winemakers to determine the winner. The winning winemaker also wins a trip to Bordeaux to the value of R30 000.
