PAARL police have sent out an alert about possible motor vehicle syndicates operating in the area. During the past week three people have been arrested in connection with the theft of two vehicles, and it is hoped that they will lead police to the source of these crimes. On Wednesday 20 May, a Datsun bakkie was stolen on the corner of Main Street and Plein Street. Shortly after this Paarl police officers identified the stolen vehicle in Lady Grey Street, with the help of the CCTV cameras which have been erected in the CBD-area. Edward Nkumanda was arrested. On Saturday evening another vehicle was stolen, this time a Toyota Avante on the corner of Derksen and New Streets. On Sunday morning, alert policemen Const Zareer Mohammed and student Const JC Coetzee noticed the vehicle being driven in Denneburg. They gave chase and apprehended two men. The police said they were investigating the possibility that a syndicate could be operating in Paarl from Cape Town. Vehicle thefts have been causing headaches for the police during the past few months. The public is requested to ensure the safekeeping of motor vehicles by securing the vehicle in their premises or the fitting of an effective alarm system. Any suspicious vehicles or persons in and around residential areas, should be reported to Paarl police station at 021-807-4000.
