Highway blues

PAARLITES are currently fighting a losing battle against speed-cameras which have been placed on the N1. Traffic authorities have reduced the speed limit on the south bound carriage-way of the N1 between Paarl and Klapmuts to 60 km per hour, due to roadworks. And every here an there, a speed trap is hidden away. Thus many Paarlites are receiving speeding fines weekly, even if they have just been driving at 80 km on this route. One person who contacted Paarl Post said that he had already accumulated R2500 of fines within a month. A spokesperson for the provincial traffic authorities said that these fines will have to be paid. “This speed limit is being enforced to protect construction workers, and whether they are working or not, the speed limit has to be obeyed, even on Sundays.” Although the work that took place on the north-bound carriage-way progressed rapidly, commuters are also unsatisfied with the snail’s pace at which the progress is taking place on the south-bound carriage-way. A local doctor who often uses this road, said that this work has not been properly planned. “Exits onto the N1 at Paarl are closed to traffic, while no work takes place on these sections of the N1 for weeks. “The authorities also do not put sufficient warning signs in place for these detours, and this often causes back-ups.” But Paarlites seem to be barking against thunder, as it is estimated that the work on this section of the N1 will take at least another six weeks.
