Trees to green Milky Town

Trees to green Milky Town

2009-06-04

MORE than 200 trees were planted in Milky Town in Dal Josaphat last week.

Fruit Unlimited added the 224 indigenous trees destined for Ward 14 in Milky Town, to the 204 that the neighbouring settlement, Smartie Town, received in 2008.

The Unlimited Group, exporters of fruit, was the first company of its kind to take this voluntary climate change action and have now rolled the carbon footprint out to the rest of the Group.

The 2008 carbon footprint for the head office in Paarl was offset by planting trees.

According to a spokesman: “Following the first calculation there has been a reduction in the emissions per employee at the head office.

“This is commendable and it is hoped other companies take up the challenge to measure, reduce and offset.”

Calculations and an evaluation of the carbon footprint were conducted using the guidelines set by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

It was based on the financial year July 2007 to June 2008 carbon emissions associated with all business-related travel, such as flights and rental car transport, as well as electricity.
