LUVO MANYONGA of Desmond Tutu Secondary in Mbekweni won gold (Long Jump, 7,65m) for the SA team during the Southern Region Senior Championships in Botswana over the weekend.
The 18-year-old also won silver in the Triple Jump (15,52m).
What makes Luvo’s achievement so special is the fact that he is a junior athlete who competed (and won) against senior athletes.
* The Boland Junior Athletes brought honour to the Western Cape during the Southern Region Senior Championships that took place in Gaborone, Botswana over the past weekend.

The Southern Region Senior Championships form part of Athletics South Africa’s preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games. The 14 Countries that were represented at the 2009 Southern Region Senior Championships were Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mosambiek, Namibia, Reunion, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The three Bolanders in the South Africa Team to the Southern Region Senior Championships were Luvo Manyonga (Mbekweni, Desmond Tutu Secondary), Janet Wienand (Maties) and Stefan Brits (Maties).

Luvo and Stefan are still junior athletes, but were not intimidated by the senior athletes from the Southern Region Countries mentioned above.

Luvo won a gold medal in Long Jump for men with a personal best of 7,65m, and Stefan, the 2008 Commonwealth Games Silver medallist, were third in the same competition, ensuring two of the three medals in the long jump were won for South Africa.

Luvo also represented South Africa in the Triple Jump for Senior Men and won a silver medal with a distance of 15,52m.

The gold medal was won by Namibia.

Not to be outdone by the junior athletes, the third athlete from the Boland in the South African Team to the 2009 Southern Region Senior Championships, Janet Wienand, won a gold medal in the 400m.
